  1. This Waymarks resource page is still being developed.

  2. The aim of Waymarks is an online community who commit to :

  3. living the way of Christ’s teaching in the Sermon on the Mount,

  4. praying for one another using a simple daily office, and

  1. THE WAYMARKS DAILY OFFICE - A SIMPLE WAY TO PRAY THROUGHOUT THE DAY

A regular cycle of Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer (the ‘Daily Office’) has always been at the core of the life of Christian communities, establishing a spiritual rhythm by which to set all the other activities of life, whether it was said by all together or by each in solitary contemplation.

This little ‘Office’ is simple enough to be committed to memory, and can be said anywhere, but, for morning and evening prayer, it is recommended that a quiet place, as free from interruptions as possible, is chosen. Maybe in bed, on waking and before sleeping, as the first and last acts of our day. Our lives are usually full of noise, so this is the ideal moment of the day to experience real silence.

Each ‘Office’ follows the same form, for simplicity and ease of remembering, with only one prayer varying from each Office to the next. The basic formal prayer structure is The Gloria, the Prayer of the Hour, the Lordʼs Prayer and the Grace. Into this structure can be incorporated a time for personal prayers. One of the ‘Offices of the Day’ should ideally also include a bible reading and meditation - perhaps using daily bible reading notes.

It is always good to start and finish the ‘Daily Office’ with a period of reflective silence. The prayers use the “we” rather than the “I” form to remind us that we join our prayers with those of all the faithful, especially those other ‘waymarkers’ using this little act of daily prayer.

A SIMPLE FORM OF PRAYER FOR

    MORNING NOON AND NIGHT :

THE BLACKSHAWHEAD GLORIA :

Glory to the Father, Glory to the Son,

Glory to the Spirit, the sacred Three in One;

Who was, and is, and is to be,

THE LORDʼS PRAYER

THE GRACE.

May the grace of Christ uphold us,

And the Father’s love enfold us,

May the Holy Spirit guide us,

And all joy and peace betide us

Now and to eternity.  Amen.

+THE PRAYER OF THE HOUR :

Morning Prayer :

O Lord our God, as with all creation

we offer you the life of this new day,

give us grace to love and serve you,

to the praise of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Noon Prayer :

God, the source of all wisdom,

you teach us in your word

that love is the fulfilling of the law;

help us to love you with all of our heart

and our neighbours as ourselves;

through Christ our Lord . Amen.

Night Prayer :

O Lord our God,

at the ending of this day,

and in the darkness and silence of this night,

cover us with healing and forgiveness,

that we may take our rest in peace,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

The teaching of Jesus as recorded by St Matthew in chapters 5-7 of his gospel is a kind of ‘manifesto’ of the Christian Way of Life.

Waymarkers are encouraged to read and study this teaching, which can be found here in various translations (just enter ‘Matt 5-7’ in the blue box and select which version you want to read).

The German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer suggested that a ‘new monasticism’ having this teaching as its core was the essence of the renewal of the church.

It is our hope that Waymarkers will be able to support one another by sharing online advice and experience of trying to live this Way, thereby touching the idea of a virtual  ‘new monasticism’.
